With the aid of contemporary technology, a Nebraskan man who cut off his pinky with a power tool while intoxicated 20 years ago has eventually received a new finger.
A 3D-printed finger that cost Adam Cutshall, 47, several thousand dollars less than the $20,000 price tag from the insurance company was given to him by a firm in New York City.
Cutshall told PEOPLE that while he was constructing a mini golf course for his son, a tool slipped and severed the tip of his finger.
Cutshall wrote in a Reddit post, “It’s been a learning process, but they have a skill that blows me away and printed me a new finger for several thousand dollars less than I was being offered.”
“This technology will change the industry,” was the statement.
He also stated that he is sober today in his Reddit message.
In 2020, Cutshall asked on Reddit if any users were proficient 3D printers in the hopes that one could create him a replacement finger.
Hodara discovered the message after that and modified preexisting prosthetic plans to suit Cutshall.
The final prosthetic has texture on the tip for gripping and bends like a finger.
The gadget, which Hodara built using a Prusa i3 MK3S printer, should last for several years.
We embarked on a journey together, designing a new model, giving him updates every week, and soliciting his input on those updates until we arrived at a point where we had a prototype that was satisfactory to him, he told PEOPLE.
